Kenya’s national men’s sevens team, Shujaa, has been crowned Africa Men’s Sevens champions after edging Madagascar 15–12 in a thrilling final in Mauritius on Sunday.

The victory secured Kenya a record seventh Africa Men’s Sevens Series title, capping a remarkable turnaround after a difficult start to the tournament.

Shujaa had suffered a shock 26–0 defeat to Madagascar in the pool stage, leaving Kenya with plenty to prove heading into the knockout rounds. The team responded strongly, showing composure and resilience when it mattered most.

In the semifinals, Kenya produced one of its best performances of the tournament, defeating South Africa 15–0 to book a place in the final and set up another meeting with Madagascar.

The final proved to be a much closer contest.

Rayvon Ambale and Gabriel Ayimba contributed crucial points for Kenya, while Glacious Owino’s late kick proved decisive as Shujaa held on for a 15–12 victory.

The triumph was particularly significant for a Kenyan squad combining experienced campaigners with players making their mark on the international sevens stage. Their ability to recover from the heavy pool-stage defeat and maintain composure in the final underlined the team’s resilience.

For Madagascar, the final was a disappointing end to an impressive campaign after their dominant pool-stage victory over Kenya.

Kenya’s latest continental title adds another chapter to Shujaa’s rich history in African rugby and provides valuable momentum ahead of the Safari Sevens.

The focus now shifts back home as Shujaa prepare for the next stage of their season, with the continental crown firmly secured.

Kenya are once again kings of African sevens rugby.
